The St. Mark's Church ( Croatian Crkva sv. Marka ) is the Roman Catholic parish of Gornji Grad , the main city of the Croatian capital Zagreb .

history

The Romanesque windows discovered under its facade on the south side suggest that a first church was built in the early 13th century , probably with a basilica cross-section.

In the last quarter of the 14th century , the Gothic style church was rebuilt as a hall church with three naves of the same height and ribbed vaults. At that time the impressive south portal of the church with its figures was built. It was designed by sculptors believed to have come from Prague and trained in the Parler's workshop .

The south portal of St. Mark's Church, built around 1400.

On the outside of the church, on the wall on the northwest side, there is the oldest coat of arms of the city of Zagreb from 1499.

The church was badly damaged in the earthquake near Zagreb in 1880 and its organ was destroyed by falling debris.

In 1866 and 1882 the church was completely renovated and given its neo-Gothic appearance. Today's coat of arms of Zagreb (white castle on a red background) and the historic coat of arms of the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia are on the roof of the church .

The interior of the church was redesigned again in the early 1920s.
