St. Martin's Church

The St. Martins Church is a Protestant church in Kelsterbach and the oldest church in the city. The current building in classical style was completed in 1823.

The beginnings of the Martinsgemeinde go back to the time before Charlemagne . At that time, on the left bank of the Main in the field between Schwanheim and Kelsterbach, a small chapel was built, consecrated to St. Martin of Tours , in which the Christians of the area held their services.

A first church building in Kelsterbach at the site of today's church is only proven after the Reformation . In 1560 a small wooden church with a pointed roof turret was built . Around 1800 it proved to be too small and was also dilapidated. The classicist building, which is practically unchanged today, was erected in its place until 1823.

A large early baroque crucifix has been placed in the church, the windows of the church were designed in 1958 by the Kelsterbach artist Marianne Scherer-Neufarth . The heart of the bells is the Gloriosa, cast by Jakobus von Fulda around 1450 . It only came to Kelsterbach after the end of World War II. Five more bells were made for the tower of St. Martin's Church in 1951 and 1989.

The Martinskirche belongs to the Deanery Rüsselsheim and is located in the Propstei Rhein-Main of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN).
