St. Michaels Church

The St. Michaels Church is a small Romanesque church in the Albstadt village of Burgfelden . It is considered one of the most important architectural monuments in Albstadt.

The simple, rectangular hall building from the 11th century was built on the remains of smaller church buildings from the 7th century. The tower, built later, shows Italian influences from Graubünden and Ticino .

Murals

In 1892, in the course of demolition work, Romanesque wall paintings were discovered in the church, which are related to the wall paintings of the Reichenau monastery . The 2.4 meter high frieze on the north, east and south walls dates from around 1070/80. The stylistic relationship with the wall paintings in St. Peter and Paul on the island of Reichenau is unmistakable. The imagery in Burgfelden surpasses this in its vividness.

The dramatic depiction of the Last Judgment on the east wall is flanked on the north side by the parable of the Good Samaritan . The south wall shows the fight of the Archangel Michael with the dragon. In another fresco he leads the blessed to heaven.
