St. Stephen's Church (Wittingen)
The St. Stephen's Church is the town church of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Hanover in Wittingen (Lower Saxony).
Excavations revealed foundations from the 9th century. The Romanesque brick building was erected around 1250. The originally three-aisled basilica with transept and choir (Gothic) later lost its aisles . The church has a strong west tower (Gothic) with a high helmet . A thorough restoration took place in 1962/63.
In 1806 the organ of the Paulinerkirche (Göttingen) was taken over. It was replaced in 1912. In the course of a revision in 1995, the prospectus from the 18th century was restored by Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau .
From 1847 to 1853, the hymn poet Philipp Spitta was superintendent in Wittingen.
