The Evangelical Lutheran St. Andrew's Church in Lumparland is beautifully situated on a hill on Kapellviken Bay . It is the oldest of Åland's three wooden churches . It was originally painted red, then yellow for a few decades. The current white paint was applied at the end of the 19th century.

history

The church was first mentioned as a chapel in 1544. During the Great Northern War , the chapel or its successors were burned down by Russian soldiers. Lumparland was destroyed and the residents fled the war. The current church was built around 1700.

The church tower is separate, it was probably built around 1746. Around 1900 the confirmands used to climb the tower to place a wreath on the weathercock . The weather vane from 1745 was originally on the top of the church tower. At the beginning of the 19th century it was moved to the choir roof.

The church was renovated in 1960 and the tin roof replaced with a shingle roof . The church had tarred shingles in the 19th century .

Interior

painting

The interior of the church is dominated by the large altar painting. It shows Jesus welcoming sinners with open arms. The painting is signed in 1887 by the well-known Finnish painter Victor Westerholm from Turku , its title: “Come to me”. The model for Westerholm's painting can be found in the church of Hörup in Skåne , Sweden . Victor Westerholm was the founder of an impressionist artist colony, the so-called Önnigeby colony .

The old altar painting on the north wall was signed by Anders Asson Ekberg in 1736 . It shows Jesus with his apostles at the last supper .

The gallery is decorated with paintings by an unknown artist, probably Claes Lange , also from Turku. The paintings contain 12 portraits of Jesus and the apostles, painted around 1760. It was originally 13 paintings, but the portrait of Matthew now hangs on the north wall.

Others

The chandelier is from the 18th century.

In the church you can find Åland's oldest robe. It dates from 1665 and was found in Provost Hedman's rectory .

In 1970 the organ by Hans Heinrich replaced the then 100-year-old Thulé organ, the prospectus of which can still be seen.
