St. Anna (Pfronten)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Anna is the place of worship in the Rehbichel district of Pfronten . It is a branch of the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Pfronten-Berg.

Chapel of St. Anna

history

Originally, the church, like the chapels in the neighboring towns of Pfronten-Weißbach and Schweingg, stood on a hill outside the village. In 1668 the church on the “Rehbichl” was torn down “because of the bad ground” and moved down to the outskirts of Rehbichel. One reason was certainly that the place of prayer was difficult to reach in winter and in rainy weather.

Building description

Shrine altar in St. Anna

The older, eastern part of the chapel is a rectangular building to which a three-sided choir adjoins. The nave had two window axes , a third axis in the choir is set off from the nave by painted pilasters . The flat ceiling is grooved.

In the years 1732–1736 extensive alterations and renovations were carried out, whereby a - now again - removed prefix was added. In 1744/45 the church received a new roof turret. In the 19th century the chapel was extended to the west and a southern entrance was created here. The turret with two bells has also been moved to the rear.

Furnishing

Like the other places of worship in Pfronten, St. Anna was originally designed almost exclusively by local artists. Only the figures of St. Joachim and St. Joseph have survived from the original equipment. They were made by the sculptor Nikolaus Babel , who, according to the holy bill 1680/81, earned 4 guilders “for 2 pictures for the altar”. A mother of God dates back to the 15th century and was bought. The former altar from the 19th century included a picture that is now hung on the west wall. It was perhaps painted by the Pfrontener painter Franz Osterried (1808-1853) and represents the instruction of St. Mary represented by St. Anna and St. Joachim.

Pieta by Nikolaus Babel in St. Anna

The current shrine altar, by the active pastor Dr. Ludwig Kohnle (1856–1930) put together, consists of a Gothic Anna selbdritt in the middle, whose origin is unclear. The two flanking relief figures (St. Catherine with sword and St. Barbara with chalice and host) are included in the work of the master of the Rankweiler image of grace . Also noteworthy is a pietà from the 17th century in a niche on the north wall. It is attributed to Nikolaus Babel and is considered one of his best works.
