St. Antonius (Fenne)

St. Antonius is a former Roman Catholic church in the Völklingen district of Fenne . The building is a historical monument.

history

The first church building was built in 1926/27 based on designs by the architects Ludwig Becker and Anton Falkowski in Saarbrücker Straße. In World War II it was heavily damaged and rebuilt in 1945 to the 1950s. In 1965 the church had to give way to the construction of the A620 motorway . Between 1963 and 1965, a new building was erected on the corner of Hausen Strasse and Fenner Strasse based on designs by the Dillingen architect Konrad Schmitz. The sacred building has been closed since the end of 2009 due to its dilapidation, as the building shows severe damage to the concrete structure. In 2013 the building was profaned and is now for sale.

architecture

Bell tower of St. Antonius (Fenne)

The hall, which is half sunken in the ground, was erected over a diamond-shaped floor plan. The load-bearing walls are stacked from inclined layers of alternately offset concrete blocks. A regular grid of small windows with matt glass panes closes the gaps. Through a mathematically calculated play of light in the interior, the light is deflected through the double-shell facade and illuminates the sanctuary with indirect light. A high ring anchor runs around the building at the eaves to the sloping tent roof. The highest point of the copper roof is the rear corner of the choir, the opposite corner of the building is slightly lower. The two corners in the north and south are drawn even deeper. You enter the church via a small, cantilevered portal with copper cladding. The ceiling is clad with wood. The marble altar stands on a wide platform with steps leading to the church.

The bell tower stands as a campanile slightly away from the building. It consists of three cross-shaped concrete struts that support a triangular bell chamber made of horizontal concrete strips.

Furnishing

The furnishings include a marble side altar with a wooden statue of the Virgin and Child from 1954 by Johann Mettler. The right side altar with a wooden statue of Anthony comes from the Höfte company in Morbach and was manufactured in 1956. The marble high altar dates from 1965 and was made by the Niederer company from Völklingen. The ambo and tabernacle stele were made by the sculptor Albert Schmitz in 1987. The modern baptismal font made of copper and bronze was designed in 1965 by a Munich company.
