from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Antonius was a church building in Wahn , Aschendorf-Hümmling district (today in the area of the municipality of Sögel in the Emsland district ). Only the foundations have been preserved from it.

history

The old Antonius Church was built in 1746. The church became too small at the beginning of the 20th century. One of the pastors was Dean Albert Johann Barenkamp (* 1861, † 1919). His successor was Bernhard Reckers. They initiated a new building. After the new building from 1923, it was 37 meters long and had 652 seats. The new church tower was completed in 1931. The plans came from the architect Wartenberg from Münster .

The new church was not used for long. On April 1, 1942, 800 Wahners met for the farewell service in the Antoniuskirche. After that, the church was desecrated and, like the village, demolished to expand the target range. The church inventory was housed in a so-called barrack chapel. With the support of the Sögel, Lathen and Rastdorf local associations , the remains were uncovered again in 2006. A circular route through Wahn was also laid out; The Wahner Friedhof can also still be visited. In 2007, 800 people met for an open-air service.

The baroque altar from 1746 by Conrad Schlaun has been in the St. Walburgis Church in Emden since 1957 .
