St. Augustine (Saarbrücken)
The Church of St. Augustine is a Roman Catholic parish church of the Trier diocese in Saarbrücken . It is located in the Eschberg district and bears the patronage of St. Augustine of Hippo .
history
In the 1950s, the Eschberg was developed as a new residential area in the Saarland capital and numerous apartments were built. As a result, there was a desire for their own church building on site. First of all, the current parish center was built in 1965 and the foundation stone for today's parish church was laid on July 5, 1970. The consecration of the Augustine Church, built according to the plans of Albert Dietz, took place on June 3, 1973 by the Trier bishop Bernhard Stein .
Building description
The parish church without a tower rises on a slope above the center of the Saarbrücken district of Eschberg. Seen from above, its flat roof has the shape of a square with rounded corners.
The floor plan of the church building consists of curved walls, niches and high ribbon windows. Immediately under the roof, a light ribbon of windows runs around the entire church.
The simple interior is brightly plastered and provided with a flat wooden ceiling. To the right of the chancel is a slightly raised and separated area for church music and a choir. The church has no bells.
organ
The organ is in a prominent position to the right of the altar and creates a sculptural impression as it can be seen from all sides. A protruding upper case with stepped towers rises on a slender foot, which contains the swell positive as well as the play cupboard on the back.
The instrument was built in 1983 by the Trier organ building company Rudolf Oehms as Opus 210. It has slide chests as well as a mechanical performance and electrical stop action. The disposition is as follows:
