St. Barbara (Kalkara)
The Saint Barbara Church and Church of the Capuchin Brothers ( Maltese Knisja ta 'Santa Barbara u il-Patrijiet Kappuċċini , English Church of St. Barbara and the Capuchin Friars ), popularly known as Santa Liberata , is a Roman Catholic church on the Triq Santu Rokku in Kalkara on the island of Malta . It is the convent church of the Capuchins . The church is listed in the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands under number 651.
history
In 1736 the Capuchin brothers began building a monastery and a church on the road from Żabbar to Kalkara. The buildings were completed in 1743 and consecrated on August 2nd of the same year. The church and its six altars were opened on June 18, 1747 by Bishop Paul Alferan under the patronage of St. Barbara from Nicomedia . Pope Benedict XIV had the relics of St. Transfer Liberata to the Church.
architecture
In addition to the baroque two-storey facade, there is a slightly offset campanile . The main entrance is designed as the middle of three passages and is slightly higher and provided with an arch, while the two side entrances are rectangular in shape, each with an oval wall opening above them. In the upper part of the facade there is a stained glass window in the middle, flanked by niches with figurative representations.
