history

The place St. Christoph is mentioned in writing for the first time in 927 and had eight properties in the Middle Ages: rectory, school, economy, sacristan, Hafner, Sturm, Schmid and Kreuzer. It was part of the Free County of Hague from 1200 to 1804 . The western border of the municipality of St. Christoph also formed the western border of the county of Haag. Since this county was an independent Reichsland and did not belong to Bavaria, this border was a focal point of history. In 1362, the Duchy of Bavaria attacked the Free County in this section of the border and razed the Hague Castle of Fraunberg near St. Christoph to the ground after bitter battles with the Hague garrison. In the Hague State Museum there are still numerous weapons, pieces of armor and projectile fragments from this battle that were recovered during archaeological excavations.

The church of St.Christoph already existed as a Romanesque church (the parish of Albaching) in 1315 and was rebuilt in the Gothic style around 1390 under the Hague Count Christian († 1396). Saint Christopher was the patron saint of the ruling Hague Counts. The chain of office of the counts consisted of pure gold with a large Christoffer figure, which was set with five rubies, two sapphires and an emerald. In the period from 1674 to 1678 the church was enlarged and redesigned in the Baroque style, as it still impresses visitors today. Three old Gothic figures (St. Christopher, St. Bartholomew and St. James) were included in the new church furnishings . The baroque altars were created by the church painters Michael and Wolfgang Hofmann from Haag. In 1765, the art carpenter Fakler from Dorfen worked on the tabernacle.

Every year since 1932 there has been a horse and tractor consecration on the Saturday evening before July 25th, as well as a driver service with a drive around and vehicle blessing on the following day.

On July 1, 1972, the previously independent parish of St. Christoph (renamed on May 31, 1922, previously only Christoph) was incorporated into the Steinhöring parish.
