St. Columban

The Catholic Church of St. Columban is located at Paulinenstrasse 98/1 in Friedrichshafen .

history

The further population growth in the post-war period in the areas of St. Georgen, Kitzenwiese and Schreieschesch in Friedrichshafen made it necessary to build an additional parish center. Therefore, an area east of St. Petrus Canisius was separated and after a tender on February 22, 1962, which was won by the local Hanns Schlichte , construction of the church began on August 1, 1965 with the laying of the foundation stone. The church was consecrated on December 10, 1966 by Bishop Pietro Zuccarino von Bobbio together with Carl Joseph Leiprecht and Wilhelm Sedlmeier to St. Columban of Luxeuil . On October 1, 1968, the church was raised to its own parish .

In 1994 and 1995 the still missing church tower was built and ringed with five bells , which are located in a traditionally made wooden bell cage. The tower was consecrated by Robert Steeb on October 16, 1995.

Church building and equipment

inside view

The church has a square floor plan and is provided with a pyramid-shaped, glazed roof, reminiscent of a tent. The church tower, built later, reflects the architecture of the church to an exaggerated degree.

The artistically crafted church windows, designed by Diether F. Domes from 1985, come into their own thanks to the simple furnishings . The church was oriented according to the then new guidelines of the Second Vatican Council . An inclined row of pews to the side makes it possible for the worshipers to gather close to the altar . The tabernacle by Diether Wendelin Matt from 1984, which is modeled on the shape of the Ark of the Covenant, is striking .
