St. Erich (Hamburg-Rothenburgsort)
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Erich between Billhorner Röhrendamm and Marckmannstrasse in the Hamburg district of Rothenburgsort was built between 1961 and 1963. It is the successor to the parish church of St. Josef am Bullenhuser Damm, which was destroyed in the Second World War. The design for the modern church structure , which looks like a large fish from the outside, comes from the Berlin architect Reinhard Hofbauer .
The church tower in particular shapes the silhouette of the district and catches the eye from a great distance, especially from the S-Bahn between the Berliner Tor (Hamburg) and Rothenburgsort stations , as well as the route between Hammerbrook (City-Süd) and the Elbe bridges .
inner space
The column-free interior, in which the congregation gathers for worship, anticipates the ideas of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). In 1969 Rudolf von Beckerath Orgelbau built a two-manual organ with 20 stops for the church.
The patron saint, Saint Erik , King of Sweden 1150 to 1160, reminds of the close connection between the church in Hamburg and Scandinavia , which has existed since Christianization. After completion of the construction, the church was consecrated by the bishop of the Swedish diocese of Stockholm , John Edward Taylor . The first pastor of this parish was Otto Scholz, who, like the whole parish, maintained close ties to the parish of St. Lars in Uppsala during his parish time. The honeycomb ceiling of the nave is in the colors blue and yellow (colors of the Swedish flag).
In Hamburg, the patron saint of the neighboring church St. Olaf (Horn) also reminds of the ties with Scandinavia.
local community
The community belongs to the Archdiocese of Hamburg . Since March 31, 2005 it is no longer an independent parish , but has been changed to the cathedral parish of St. Marien .
