St. François Xavier , originally Grantown , is a rural community on the Assiniboine River , west of Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba . In 1824, Cuthbert Grant and several other Métis families founded the new Grantown settlement in the area known as White Horse Plain . Just a few years after it was founded, the place received the name of the patron saint of the local church, Francisco de Xavier . In 1870 the province of Manitoba was founded and St. François Xavier was established as a parish in it. In 2006 there were 1087 inhabitants.
