The St. Franziskus Church with Franz-Stock-Kindergarten and rectory

The St. Franziskus Church is located in the Neheim district of the city of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerland district .

St. Francis is a Roman Catholic church named after St. Francis of Assisi . The church forms a unit with the Franz Stock community center and the rectory. The kindergarten was built in 1978 under the direction of the architect Hubert Ossenberg . The groundbreaking ceremony for the church took place in 1981. It was developed by the May 28, 1983 Auxiliary Bishop Hans Leo Drewes consecrated .

In 1983 there was a wish to transfer the patronage of the new church to Franz Stock . Since he is not recognized as a blessed by canon law, this was not possible. Through Franz Stock's membership in the youth movement “Compagnons de Saint Francois”, Francis of Assisi became the patron of the church. The reliquary grave of the altar contains the remains of a contemporary of Franz Stock, St. Maximilian Kolbe . A Franciscan Minorite who gave his life for a father in the Auschwitz concentration camp .

Crosses can be seen on the benches and doors in the church, which are supposed to remind of the work of Franz Stock and look like prison bars. This structure can also be found in the exposed brickwork and in the latticed church windows and doors.

The brothers Michael and Christof Winkelmann designed and manufactured all liturgical candlesticks and created the principal liturgical pieces from red Main sandstone: altar , ambo and baptismal font . Copper was chosen as the material for the tabernacle . The square shape of the sacraments opens upwards and ends in a transparent pine crown held by two copper rods. The side surfaces offer space for depictions on the subject of "God's goodness for man". Here, too, Franz Stock is depicted: The priest stands with prisoners in the hour of their death on Mont Valérien near Paris.

Parish

The beginnings of the parish St. Franziskus go back to the year 1953, when the Neheimer parish St. Michael planned a church for the new building area Müggenberg and later also Rusch. The nucleus of the new community were first family groups that developed from the beginning of the 1970s and initiated the construction of the community center with a kindergarten. From the end of 1974, services were also held in the adjoining primary school. On February 1, 1997, the St. Francis parish became independent from the mother parish of St. Michael. Since January 1st, 2013 the church belongs to the newly founded parish of St. Johannes Baptist. Neheim and Vosswinkel.
