St. Gallus Church

The St. Gallus Church is a Catholic church in the Ludwigshafen district of Friesenheim . It was built between 1847 and 1848.

history

Friesenheim was first mentioned in 771 in the Lorsch Codex . A church is mentioned for the first time in 1238, which belonged to the Lorsch monastery . Due to the patronage of St. Leodegar , one suspects an early medieval foundation by the Murbach monastery . In 1247 the Lorsch Vogtei and with it the right of patronage over the church in Friesenheim came to the Count Palatine near the Rhine . Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate in 1556 . When the Palatinate church was divided in 1705, however, the church fell to the Catholics. It was not until 1738 that Friesenheim received its own parish again.

In 1753 a new church was built after the old one fell victim to the floods. Patron was now St. Gallus . Why the change took place is not known. In 1843 the church had to be closed due to dilapidation. The new building was built from 1847 according to plans by Jakob and Gabriel Foltz. In the following year, the new St. Gallus Church was completed and in 1849 it was consecrated. With the St. Joseph parish that was separated in 1922, St. Gallus now forms a parish community .
