Chemnitz-Rabenstein, St. Georg Church

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. Georg is a neo-Gothic church building in the Rabenstein district of the city of Chemnitz . In 1852 the old St. George's Church was demolished and the new church was built until 1854. At that time it was the first neo-Gothic church in central Saxony. It is a protected cultural monument and on the list of cultural monuments in Chemnitz-Rabenstein with the number 09204971.

St. George Church

The church on Georgenkirchweg 2, which was built between 1852 and 1854, still includes the following parts as a protected cultural monument: the former churchyard, the enclosure wall, the retaining wall at the church, three memorial trees and a war memorial for the fallen of the Franco-German Empire War 1870/1871. The church building is in an elevated situation that defines the townscape. It is a high-quality neo-Gothic building with a high west tower and striking buttresses made of porphyry and slate, an important Saxon church building of the early neo-Gothic.

On the south side of the nave there is also a neo-Gothic memorial stone in memory of those who fell in the war of 1870/1871 . The war memorial - designated 1875 - is a monument in memory of the victims of this last German war of unification.

In 1929 the church was renovated and the organ was also rebuilt. The second renovation of the church took place between 1982 and 1992. It was not until 2016 that St. George received three new bronze bells, which were cast in Innsbruck. They are called faith , hope and love . To do this, the tower had to be renovated.

The ensemble is of architectural and artistic importance, but has also shaped the townscape and is of historical importance.

Peace oaks

In the vicinity of the church there are also three large peace trees that are protected as cultural monuments.

Rectory

The nearby rectory with its garden and the enclosure wall (Georgenkirchweg 1) does not belong to the ensemble of St. George's Church. It is its own protected cultural monument. It is a stately, broad-based building and has a visible half-timbered construction on the upper floor. It is of importance in terms of building and local history.
