The Protestant Church of St. Georg is a church building in Dörna , a district of Anrode , in the Unstrut-Hainich district ( Thuringia ).

History and architecture

The building is essentially a Romanesque hall church that has been changed several times over the years. Originally it was under the patronage of the apostles Peter and Paul, the building with a south-west tower is in an elevated position. It was probably built on the site of a ring castle from the 1st century BC. An inscription in red chalk A. Domini 1119 has been preserved on the exposed lime paint in the wall of the portal between the tower and the community hall . This year is interpreted as the year of foundation, since chronicles also report the same wording. The wall ring with the southern gatehouse from the 13th century, parts of the tower and the northern wall of the nave have been preserved from the likely fortified church of the Middle Ages. The church tower was raised between 1290 and 1470, it took on its shape as a defense and escape tower and thus formed the center of the defense system. The building was expanded several times, the last time in 1713. The interior was given a new design during the thorough renovation from 1965 to 1970.

Furnishing

  • The organ from around 1700 is considered an outstanding work by Johann Friedrich Wender from Arnstadt, it is on the west gallery.
  • The baptismal font has flat ashlar ornamentation, it probably comes from the neo-Gothic period.
