St. George

The Catholic parish church of St. Georg is a listed church building in Oberhammerstein .

history

The Romanesque choir tower

The church was built towards the end of the 12th century as a royal foundation for a church. It stands at the foot of Hammerstein Castle . In the 15th century the central nave was vaulted . The basilica consists of three bays and has a choir that is just closing. Above it is an octagonal tower floor with a pointed helmet on it . In this hang two bells with a diameter of 61 and 96 cm. These were cast around 1050, making them one of the oldest bells on the Middle Rhine .
