The Cathedral of Saint George ( Arabic القديس جاورجيوس, French Saint George ) is a church building of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch in Beirut . It is the seat of the metropolitan . An archaeological museum has been set up below the church . The Greek Orthodox Saint George's Church is the oldest still existing church building in Beirut.

The cathedral is located in the center of Beirut on the eastern side of Sāhat an-Najma , the star square opposite the clock tower . To the south and south-east are the Mohammed al-Amin mosque and the St. George's Cathedral of the Syrian-Maronite Church of Antioch . Between the sacred buildings there is a large archaeological excavation from Roman times .

Archaeological Museum

During excavation work under the cathedral, finds from various eras were secured. These finds are exhibited in a specially set up museum. During the excavations, finds from the Hellenistic period , the Roman- Byzantine period, the Middle Ages and the period of the Ottoman Empire were made. The museum is separated from the interior of the church by a glass floor. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Mondays.
