St. George is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Mariehamn in Finland .

history

On September 4, 1926, the foundation stone was laid for the church in Mariehamn, which was completed in autumn 1927. It is the work of the well-known architect Lars Sonck , a native of Finström . He worked with Bruno Tuukkanen, who designed the interior. The two created a complete body of work. The builder was Frithjof Lindholm . It was probably donated by Maritime Councilor August Troberg and his wife Johanna. The church was later rebuilt and enlarged and last renewed in 1972.

Furnishing

The interior of the church was designed primarily by Bruno Tuukkanen, who designed the Finnish flag.

  • The ceiling paintings are inspired by ancient church symbols. The paintings in the side aisle depict the life of Jesus in 24 scenes.
  • The stained glass are also by Tuukkanen. They show the apostles, but without Judas, and the holy family
  • The baptismal font from 1934 is made of black granite with a bowl and lid made of silver.
  • The votive ship was built in 1972 by Viktor Anderssonin Föglö .
  • Likewise the mosaic above the altar . It depicts the life of Jesus from his birth to the crucifixion and resurrection. The central motif is Jesus blessing the children.
  • The organ with 37 voices was built in 1969/1982 by the Grönlund organ workshop in Gammelstad.
  • There are three bells. The largest has a weight of 700 kg. The little bell was originally in Bomarsund Fortress and as spoils of war in England. It was returned in 1925.
