St. George's Anglican Church

St. George's Anglican Church is an Anglican church in Basseterre , Saint Kitts, and Nevis .

history

In 1670 French Jesuits built a church dedicated to Mary (Notre Dame); In 1706 this Notre Dame was burned down by British soldiers. It was rebuilt and officially renamed St. George's (1710), under the tenure of Rev . Alexander Cockburn . St. George's was appropriated for Anglican worship in the 1720s. In 1763 it was damaged again by fire and restored again. The earthquake of 1842 followed by the hurricane of 1843 destroyed the church so thoroughly that a completely new building had to be built.

New Church

The New Church was built east of the old building. The foundation stone was laid on October 22, 1844. However, the church did not get beyond the foundations. For the next twelve years, the congregation worshiped in the ruins of the old church. In 1856 the construction of today's church began and it was consecrated on March 25, 1859. Seven years later it was destroyed again in the Great Fire of 1867 ; In 1869 the roof was re-covered and the renovations carried out. One organ was built in 1872 by Henry Booth of Wakefield . At that time the church did not have any stained glass windows.

Natural disasters in recent times

In a series of hurricanes since 1989, the church has been damaged several times, but has been repeatedly restored.

architecture

The church was designed by William Slater , who also designed the furnishings and stained glass windows. It is built from andesite in neo-Gothic style with a tower adorned with battlements in the style of English Norman churches . The roof is covered with slate. In 1956 a Lady Chapel and a sacristy were added.
