St. Hedwig (Bierdzan)
The Roman Catholic scrap wood church of St. Hedwig is a church in the village of Bierdzan (Polish: Bierdzany ) north of Opole . It is dedicated to St. Hedwig of Silesia .
history
A church dedicated to St. Valentine has stood on the current area of St. Hedwig's Church since 1410 . The current building dates from 1711. The date is evidenced by an engraving in the foundation stone. In 1930 the church was completely renovated, with the slim tower receiving a dome, among other things.
Furnishing
Inside the church there are several altars, including the baroque main altar from the 18th century, decorated with many figures of saints. This was created by the master carpenter Kasper Żołądek from Opole . The ceiling in the main nave is painted and in the sacristy there is a patronage box. The walls inside are decorated with old wall paintings that were discovered and renewed during restoration work in the 1970s. Below is a portrait of death, also known as the death of Bierdzany (Polish Bierdzańska Śmierć ). The stations of the cross were created at the beginning of the 19th century.
The bell tower, built in column construction, received its current dome during the renovation in 1930. The bells probably come from the previous St. Valentin building and were cast between 1503 and 1521.
