Bierdzan ( Polish Bierdzany , 1936–1945 Burkardsdorf ) is a village in Upper Silesia . Bierdzany is located in the municipality of Turawa in the Opolski powiat in the Polish Opole Voivodeship . Bierdzan has been officially bilingual (Polish and German) since 2012.

Geographical location

Bierdzan is located in the historical region of Upper Silesia in the Opole region . The place is ten kilometers northeast of the Turawa municipal seat and 23 kilometers northeast of the district town and voivodeship capital Opole .

The place is in the Nizina Śląska ( Silesian Plain ) within the Równina Opolska ( Opole Plain ). The place is located on Bierdzaner Wasser (Polish Bierdzańska Woda ). The state road Droga krajowa 45 and the voivodship roads Droga wojewódzka 463 and Droga wojewódzka 494 run through the village .

Bierdzan was first mentioned in 1279. The mayor is called Burkado de Birdzan . In 1410 the place is mentioned as Birdzan . In the same year a wooden chapel was built in the village.

In 1711, the scrap wood church of St. Hedwig of Silesia was built and replaced the wooden structure from the 15th century. After the First Silesian War in 1742, Bierdzan and most of Silesia fell to Prussia .

After the reorganization of the province of Silesia which belonged rural community Bierdzany from 1816 to district Opole in the administrative district of Opole . On July 22nd, 1841 the parish of Bierdzan was founded. Before that the village belonged to the parish in Bodland . In 1845 there was a Catholic church, a Catholic school, an outbuilding, a distillery and 75 houses in the village. In the same year 648 people lived in Bierdzan, two of them Protestant and three Jewish. In 1874 the district of Bierdzan was founded, which consisted of the rural communities Bierdzan, Ellguth-Turawa, Kadlub-Turawa and Sackrau-Turawa and the manor districts of Bierdzian, Ellguth-Turawa, Kadlub-Turawa and Sackrau-Turawa and the Sackrau-Turawa colony. The first head of office was the Majorate Lord Count von Garnier in Turawa. In 1885 the place had 832 inhabitants.

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 449 eligible voters voted to remain with Germany and 156 for Poland. Bierdzan remained with the German Empire . Around 1930 the district of Bierdzan was dissolved and assigned to the district of Turawa . In 1933 there were 1,179 inhabitants. On May 19, 1936, the place was renamed Burkardsdorf . In 1939 the place had 1,151 inhabitants. Until 1945 the place was in the district of Opole .

In 1945 the previously German place came under Polish administration and was renamed Bierdzany and joined the Silesian Voivodeship. In 1950 the place came to the Opole Voivodeship . In 1999 the place came to Powiat Opolski . On March 8, 2012, the place was also given the official German place name Bierdzan.

  • The Roman Catholic scrap wood church of St. Hedwig of Silesia (Polish Kościół św. Jadwigi ) was built in 1711. Inside there is a baroque altar from the 18th century and a wall painting with the portrait of death, which was rediscovered during renovation work.
