St. Ignatius von Loyola is a chapel in the Ofterschwanger district of Schweinberg .

History and description

The current chapel dates from the 20th century; a previous building was built in 1707 and demolished in 1978. This first chapel in Schweinberg was located directly on the north side of building no.11 in Schweinberg and thus directly on the through town, which led to considerable structural damage and ultimately to the removal of the structure, which was closed on three sides, with two arched windows and transverse oval windows on the sloping sides. A pictorial representation with text from 1672 testifies to the construction of this chapel: Hans Stadler and Matheis Hartmann, it can be read there, talked about the construction of a chapel in 1672. Stadler owned a suitable piece of land, but did not want to give it away because there was a fertile pear tree on it. After he had stated that he would be willing to part with this property in order to build a chapel, if only the tree was not there, the pear tree died within 30 weeks; his remains could be pulled out of the ground by two people "including the Wenz". The result: “So we have to build a chapel on the Ho Ignati Alda in honor of the Queen of Heaven at this miraculous arrangement of God. Anno 1707 ". The picture shows the farmer couple pulling the tree out of the ground. In the clouds above this scene are Mary and Ignatius of Loyola .

The construction of a new chapel was discussed as early as the middle of the 20th century, as the old one suffered not only from the vibrations caused by the through traffic, but also from the roof avalanches that fell from the neighboring building. In 1976 it was blocked by the building authorities. In 1977 a suitable piece of land was acquired, on which the new chapel was built by 1979. This was inaugurated on December 2, 1979 by Auxiliary Bishop Rudolf Schmidt. Altar, ambo and priest's seat were still missing at that time, so that the altar could not be consecrated until July 23, 1982 by Bishop Josef Stimpfle . On the occasion of this consecration, relics of Johannes Nepomuk , the Kreszentia von Kaufbeuren and Franz von Sales were placed in the altar . A statue of the Virgin Mary from around 1700 adorns the chapel, which the Mayor of Ofterschwang, Hans Bader, once described as the “optical and spiritual center of the place”.

In the chapel there are memorial plaques for those citizens of Schweinberg who died or went missing in the First and Second World Wars .

Vollmer produced an H0 version of the chapel in Schweinberg for model railroaders.
