The Vollmer GmbH & Co. KG i. L. was a German manufacturer of model railroad accessories based in Stuttgart . The Vollmer kits have been manufactured by Viessmann Modelltechnik GmbH since September 2014 .
history
In 1946, the trained optician Wolfram Karl Vollmer (1924–2010) founded the company. Initially, the company manufactured sheet metal items such as buttons and tie pins. The first plastic items followed in 1948, and in 1949 Vollmer presented the patented overhead contact line for the first time at the Nuremberg Toy Fair . After the start of series production for overhead lines, bridges and other accessories for model railways in the nominal size H0 followed, later also for the nominal sizes N and Z. From 1995 models for nominal sizes G and from 2005 for TT were also created. The foundation stone for the factory building in Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen was laid in 1956. In 1963, 1973, 1979 it was heavily expanded structurally.
Vollmer and his colleague Wolfgang Keck reproduced architecturally distinctive buildings as exemplary building types . To do this, he measured the respective buildings on site, and photos and hand sketches also served as a database for the replicas.
In December 2013, the Vollmer family announced that they would cease operations on June 30, 2014. The company was dissolved on January 17, 2014. In August 2014 it was announced that, after brief negotiations, Viessmann Modellspielwaren GmbH, which already owns the former competitor Kibri, has taken over the licenses for the Vollmer® brand . The kits for the models are now being manufactured by Wieland Viessmann's partner companies in Hungary and Romania. Viessmann had 2800 injection molds transported there by Vollmer.
The neighboring automobile manufacturer Porsche acquired the Vollmer company premises to expand its company facilities.
Products
Vollmer manufactured building kits in the nominal sizes G , H0 , TT , N and Z as well as overhead lines for the H0 and N gauge . Vollmer was one of the first model railway companies to produce construction kits with biodegradable plastics. Since taking over the products and the Vollmer brand, Viessmann Modellspielwaren GmbH has continued to sell Vollmer bio-plastic products under the "Bio-Series".
The second mainstay of Vollmer GmbH & Co. KG i. L. was the “precision injection molding ” branch of production with the manufacture of precision parts made of thermoplastics and injection molds for industrial applications.
