Building typology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A building typology or house typology is understood as the assignment of buildings to groups that differ according to their architecture , function or use . A similar term is that of the structural shape , which also differentiates buildings according to spatial and design aspects.

In contrast, a construction method is the construction of a building with regard to the materials and technologies used.

Principle and meaning

The building typology is used to assign buildings to groups on the basis of distinguishable characteristics of their architecture. The city as a collection of the most diverse building individualities can be structured on the basis of these buildings; very roughly into large and small, flat and high and very fine into houses with large and small windows.

Meaningful distinctions provide information about the typology and thus about the benefits and use of a certain type of building. Certain peculiarities emerge in the distinction, for example distinctions according to content and expression or form and expression in accordance with the location or the use. The differentiation of group characteristics that characterize these types results in a catalog that is useful as a repertoire for an urban design .
