St. Jakobi is a former Catholic parish church in Coesfeld . It is a little younger than the Lamberti Church , from which it was parish in the late 12th century, and to which it has belonged again since the end of 2007. The former parish area comprised the southwestern city center, the adjacent urban area and the peasantry Flamschen. St. Jakobi is located on Letter Street in the south of Coesfeld's old town.

The old Jakobikirche, destroyed in 1945

The old church was a single-bay stepped hall with a three-bay transept and a single-bay, rectangular closed choir. It was located on a historic Way of St. James that led to Santiago de Compostela , 2,672 kilometers away , and was a gathering point for pilgrims in the Middle Ages. The tower was four floors high and the lower floor was an open hall. Later, the side aisles were renewed in the Gothic style, as was the choir, after all, St. Jakobi was again generously expanded from 1923 onwards. The bombing of Coesfeld on March 21, 1945 resulted in the total destruction of the old Jakobikirche.

The new Jakobikirche and its equipment

After 1945, the Romanesque tower basement and the magnificent portal were reconstructed, the fragments of which could be recovered from the rubble. The tower of the new church was erected on top of it, which now, since St. Jakobi was not built exactly at the old location, was detached from the actual building like a campanile . The connecting passage between tower and church, called “Paradise”, serves as a lapidarium . There are some sculptures and Romanesque capitals from the destroyed building. A local was hired as the architect. The new Jakobikirche is a building with a wide, flat-roofed central nave and narrow aisles as well as two transepts. The choir is added like a round apse. St Jakobi is characterized by the modern architectural style, but is clearly based on Romanesque building forms. The interior is supported by round pillars on which massive cube capitals rest. From the old furnishings have been transferred to the new church:

  • the Antwerp carved altar made around 1520, in the choir since 1984. The altar wings made by Theodor Stracke in Bocholt are additions from 1892.
  • The Romanesque baptismal font (around 1230) over which the blessed Anna Katharina Emmerick was baptized.
  • several preserved sculptures, u. a. of the parish patron St. James and a Madonna in baroque style.

organ

The organ building company Westfälischer Orgelbau S. Sauer (Höxter), which went bankrupt in 2015, completed a new organ system as one of its last works in 2014 , consisting of the main organ and choir organ. Both instruments each have their own console . The console of the choir organ has two manuals . The registers of the second manual are generated via alternating loops . In addition, there is a general console for both instruments in the choir room. The action actions of the main organ are mechanical, the stop action and the action of the choir organ are electric. The organ system has a total of 46 sounding stops, 20 of which were restored and adopted from the previous organ by Franz Breil . The inauguration took place on November 22, 2014.
