Ottho Gerhard Heldring
Ottho Gerhard Heldring (born May 17, 1804 in Zevenaar , † July 11, 1876 in Marienbad ( Austria-Hungary )) was a Dutch Reformed clergyman and author . He was one of the leaders of the revival movement ( Het Réveil 1815-1865) in the Netherlands.
life and work
Heldring studied in Utrecht from 1820 and became a pastor in Hemmen in 1827 . There he worked in the spirit of the awakening movement for the Inner Mission . Among other things, he founded a home for " fallen girls " in Steenbeek near Hemmen in 1848 , which he soon followed up with similar institutions. The establishment of a “Magdalenasyls” in Boppard , from which the Bethesda-St. Martin emerged . He was also the director of the Heldring-Anstalten he founded, a philanthropic organization in Zetten . Here he also founded the first Dutch school for teachers in 1864.
He had a school built in Hoenderloo and a church a few years later, and he was one of the initiators of an institution for disadvantaged boys (the forerunner of today's Hoenderloo group). He devoted a large part of his life to his philanthropic work, even more than to literature and science. He died in Marienbad in Bohemia on July 11, 1876.
He was the spiritual father of the "Gelders People's Almanac" and from 1835 to 1847 made contributions in the Liemers dialect under the pseudonym Master Maorten Baordman. In addition, he wrote articles on "Magdalena, Evangelisch Jaarboekje, uitgegeven ten behoeve van het Asyl Steenbeek" (published 1853–1890), "Bethel, Christelijke Stads- en Dorps-Almanak" (1864–1874) and "Het Zettensch Dorpskronykske" ( Zetten, 1868). He was editor of "De Vereeniging, Christelijke stemmen" (Amsterdam 1850).
With Lublink Weddik he edited "Waarheid en gevoel in 't leven" (Amsterdam 1837) and with Christianus Petrus Eliza Robidé van der Aa "De Volksbode" (Amsterdam 1839–1847). He also wrote short stories, translations, etc.
family
Heldring was with Anna Elisabeth Deuffer Wheel ( 1873 - 1807 married). They had two daughters and five sons. Two sons were ministers, among them Louis ( 1852 - 1923 ), the Reformed pastor in Amsterdam was and Gertrude Margaret van Eeghen ( 1851 - 1941 ), married the daughter of Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen . His son Balthasar was a banker. Heldring is the grandfather of the sculptor Margot Hudig-Heldring and the Dutch journalist Jerome Louis Heldring .
