St. Januarius is a church building in Niedersprockhövel , a district of Sprockhövel , in the Ennepe-Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is the church of the Catholic parish St. Januarius Sprockhövel, which has belonged to the parish of St. Peter and Paul Witten-Herbede in the diocese of Essen since 2007 .

history

Foundation stone was laid on 13 August 1899 on 20 May 1900, the new church was benediziert . It was a neo-Gothic barn-style building with wooden supports in the interior.
On April 15, 1945, the church was badly damaged by American and German artillery; After repair, a Holy Mass could be celebrated for the first time on September 16, 1945.

In 1962 the church interior had proven to be insufficient. The middle section between the tower and the choir was completely demolished and widened by a third. This is how today's asymmetrical shape came about. In 1987 the church was extensively renovated, with new gable roofs being built on the northwest side.
Inside, in 1989, at the initiative of Pastor Lothar Wiethüchter, the altar was moved from the choir to an altar island in the middle of the nave.

And finally, in 1999, the church forecourt was paved with a Gothic labyrinth , which is modeled on the labyrinth of Amiens Cathedral .

Furnishing

The altar designed by Klemens Link from Bochum was made from the Ruhr sandstone from the larger altar previously used in the choir.

The thick glass window in the southeast wall was created by Hubertus Brouwer from Ochtrup.

In the north-west wall there are three figures of St. Hedwig , St. Joseph and St. Boniface . These are works by the Traunstein artist Cilly Schmidt-Kramny.

The 14 Stations of the Cross pictures were made in 1945 from cartridges of grenades from World War II.

organ

The organ is a pipe organ made by Feith from Paderborn and has 13 registers . It was acquired in 1954 with the main work as a used organ from the Redemptorist monastery in Bochum . The second part was purchased in 1964 when the church was being rebuilt.
