history
St. Johannes - originally a Martinskirche ; The time and occasion of the change of patronage are unknown - it was built around 1050 in the southern part of the Small Bailiwick of Goslar , to which the royal court also belonged and whose area was cut through by the city fortifications of the 12th century. Since then, St. John has been outside the wall. The name mountain village that has long been used for this area and the Johanneskirche as the “parish church of the mountain village” has recently been questioned. Accordingly, the area of the church and the adjacent courtyard , the seat of the court of the small bailiwick ("up dem hove"), would have been the place where the name Goslar originally adhered before it was extended to the market area north of the royal court. The traditional assignment of the Johanneskirche to the community of Montanen is also called into question. There is evidence that it was part of a hospital foundation for poor and sick miners.
After 1200 St. Johannes was rebuilt larger and more representative, u. a. with a dominant western bar . In the following century, the settlement area lost its importance and gradually became deserted ; only the church remained. It was only at this time that the sources speak of the mountain village .
Given the threat of Goslar through . Henry II of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1527, the Council of defense strategic considerations in addition to the left George - and the Peter pin and the Johanniter Coming to the Holy grave also erode the St. John's Church. The hospital foundation was transferred to the Klaus chapel .
The Johanneskirche was so completely forgotten that its foundations could only be excavated and secured in 1925 after an intensive study of the sources.
