The St. John's Cathedral in Fresno in Fresno County in California , United States , is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno . It bears the patronage of St. John the Baptist and is today the oldest Catholic church in the city.
history
In 1878 the Catholic settlers in Fresno began fundraising to build their own church. The Central Pacific Railroad transferred two properties on this occasion, whereupon the Bishop of Monterey-Los Angeles , Francisco Mora y Borrell , acquired two adjacent properties. Thus, at the beginning of 1880, the predecessor of today's church building could begin. The brick building with a 27 meter high tower was completed in November of the same year and consecrated on May 21, 1882 by Bishop Mora John the Baptist. At the beginning the community had five Catholic families.
As the number of believers in the parish area grew, it became necessary to build a larger church at the beginning of the new century. In 1902, after the Easter services, the old building was demolished in order to build the new church on the same site. However, the pastor insisted on relocating the new building on Mariposa Street, at that time still outside the city, and ultimately prevailed. Construction began on August 3, 1902; the Coadjutor Archbishop of San Francisco , George Thomas Montgomery , consecrated the Church on June 7, 1903.
When the diocese of Monterey-Fresno was formed in 1922 through the division of the diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles, St. John's was designated as the cathedral of the new diocese. In 1967 the Pope divided the diocese again, creating the Diocese of Fresno , whose episcopal church has been St. John's Cathedral since then.
building
The church was designed by Thomas Bermingham in a Gothic style and built with red bricks. The facade includes three portals. Unlike the first building, today's cathedral has two towers; both have a tip. There is a rose window above the entrance .
