The St. John's Episcopal Church is a church building in the Episcopal Church in Richmond (Virginia) in the United States .

Historical meaning

The St. John's Episcopal Church was built in 1741 and is the oldest church in Richmond. Due to its historical importance, especially in connection with the American Revolutionary War , the St. John’s has had the status of a National Historic Landmark since January 1961 and has since been one of 121 historical sites of this type in Virginia. In October 1966, the church was listed as a building on the National Register of Historic Places . Also, St. John's Episcopal Church is Contributing Property of the St. John's Church Historic District , which was created in September 1970. It became particularly well known on March 23, 1775 as the setting for Give me Liberty, or give me Death! - Speech by Patrick Henry . In 1781, during the occupation of Richmond, the later defector General Benedict Arnold used the church building as quarters for his troops. The church and its cemetery with the graves of well-known personalities such as George Wythe (one of the founding fathers of the United States) or Eliza Poe (mother of the writer Edgar Allan Poe ) are now a popular tourist destination with insights into the time of the American Revolutionary War .
