St. Joseph (Heidkamp)
St. Joseph is the Roman Catholic Church in the Heidkamp area of the city of Bergisch Gladbach . It is the parish church of the parish of St. Joseph and St. Antonius in the district dean of the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis ( Archdiocese of Cologne ), which was created on July 1, 2011 by merging .
Building history
The Heidkamper Catholics belonged to the parish of St. Laurentius in Bergisch Gladbach for centuries and had to cover the often arduous path there for church services. In 1911 the "Catholic Church Building Association Bergisch Gladbach-Süd" was founded with the aim of building its own church in Heidkamp; In 1912 it already had 115 members. Delayed by the First World War and the inflation that followed it, the building of the church began in 1922. The church planned by the Cologne architect Stephan Mattar was completed in 1930 and consecrated on September 28, 1930.
On August 6, 1937, Heidkamp was spun off from the parish of St. Laurentius and raised to the status of an independent parish rectorate of St. Joseph; on May 18, 1951, the canonical parish of St. Joseph was established.
Since the first church had become too small due to the brisk construction activity in Heidkamp, construction of a new church on the opposite side of the street began in 1958. The architect was Erwin Schiffer . On April 20, 1958, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on the property acquired from the city of Bergisch Gladbach. The church consecration took place on April 3, 1960 by the Cologne auxiliary bishop Wilhelm Cleven . The church interior can accommodate 450 people. The bulky looking building gets its special note from the large rubble stones made from Lindlar greywacke .
Since 2011, St. Joseph has formed together with St. Maria Frieden (Eikamp) , St. Johann Baptist (Herrenstrunden) , St. Severin (Sand) , St. Antonius Abbas (Herkenrath) and St. Maria s. t. Immaculata Conceptionis ( Bärbroich ) the parish of St. Joseph and St. Antonius.
