St. Catherine

The listed Protestant Church of St. Katharina is located in the Bürden district of the city of Hildburghausen in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

Building history

The church was first mentioned in 1409. The chancel under the church tower dates from this time . In the 19th century a storey was added to it, which was designed in a neo-Romanesque style with eight gables and a slotted, octagonal roof turret . In 1493 the church was rebuilt. The sacristy with a rib-free cross vault was created next to the choir . The nave, which was raised in 1837 and given a flat ceiling, also dates from that time. The pointed arched windows in the choir, the triumphal arch between the choir with its pointed arched vault and the nave and the sacrament house on the north wall are designed in late Gothic style. The entrance portal was originally on the north side and was relocated to the west wall. The simple interior has been painted in white and red tones since 1988.

Furnishing

A small, single-manual organ is located on the gallery . Michael Schmidt from Schmiedefeld built it in 1838. There are three steel bells hanging in the church tower, which were cast in 1920 to replace bells given up in the First World War.
