St. Laurentius City Church

The Protestant St. Laurentius City Church is a church in the southern city center of Möckern .

Building description

The church consists of a square tower and a much wider nave as well as the again narrower sanctuary . The original building of the tower made of field stones dates from the 10th century, the nave from the 15th century.

Today's appearance essentially comes from the 15th century. At that time, the late Romanesque nave was demolished and a new hall with a gable roof and the narrower polygonal chancel was built from its field stones instead of a basilica . The nave was provided with buttresses at its corners, and the windows were given ogive shapes. Other exterior details that are still visible today date from the renovation phase between 1581 and 1593. At that time, the plastered east gable with its panels, cornices and spiral corner ornaments was created.

To the southeast of the church is the old parsonage , built around 1660/1680, and to the northeast is the Möckern war memorial .

Church interior

The interior of the church is dominated by the works carried out after the fire of 1688. At that time the nave received its flat vaulted ceiling, which is supported by two square pillars. A horseshoe-shaped gallery runs along the walls . At the end of the northern gallery, a patronage box in the baroque style was added around 1710 .

The most valuable item in the inventory is the altarpiece from 1587. It is an ensemble made of wood with a central section framed by columns, two side wings and an attachment. All parts contain paintings depicting Jesus in Gethsemane up to the Ascension . The octagonal baptismal font made of sandstone was made in 1583 and used to stand in the Leitzkau castle church. The polygonal pulpit, which is also carved from wood and rests on a slender, winding column, dates from 1674. It is adorned with paintings and sayings, it was originally in the Magdeburg Johanniskirche . A walk through the history of the city is conveyed by the numerous gravestones, of which the figure gravestones for Claus von Barby († 1579) and Kunigunde von Barby († 1588) are among the oldest.
