The Church of St. Ludmilla is a Roman Catholic church in the Prague district of Vinohrady . It is located as a dominant building on Friedensplatz and is dedicated to St. Ludmilla of Bohemia .

The church was built between 1888 and 1892 according to the plans of the Bohemian church builder Josef Mocker and was the first project to be carried out and completed entirely according to his plans. It was consecrated in the year of completion by the Prague Archbishop František Schönborn , and then the remains of St. Ludmilla and St. Wenceslas of Bohemia transferred to the church.

Building description

The building was designed as a neo-Gothic , three-aisled basilica made of exposed bricks and is one of the most striking points in the Prague city panorama. The floor plan is laid out as a cross. The facade is characterized by the two sixty-meter-high towers and the rose window. Both towers are equipped with two bells each. The main portal is located above the entrance stairs, the tympanum of which is shaped by a stone relief by the sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek . It shows St. Ludmilla and St. Wenceslaus and the emblems of the four evangelists. In the gables of the main nave and the side aisles there are statues of the patron saints of Bohemia. The interior of the church is characterized by magnificent frescoes and vitrages.
