Josef Václav Myslbek
Josef Václav Myslbek (born June 20, 1848 in Smíchov , † June 2, 1922 in Prague ) was a Czech sculptor whose works reflect the political and cultural rise of Bohemia after its national rebirth in the 19th century and in the National Theater Prague , at the Municipal House , in St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle , on the Palacky bridge and the Wenceslas Square are preserved.
Life
Josef Václav (Wenzel) Myslbek came from a modest background in what was then the suburb of Smíchov near Prague and is said to have left school prematurely for financial reasons and learned the profession of printer .
From 1861 to 1871 Josef Václav Myslbek studied at the Prague Art Academy, a. a. with J. Trankwald; before and afterwards with extended study visits to Vienna, Dresden and Paris. In 1866 he met the sculptor Václav Levý and was his student until his death in 1870. In 1873 he opened his own studio in Prague. From 1885 to 1896 he was professor at the School of Applied Arts in Prague, which later became the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague, and from 1896 to 1919 professor at the Prague Academy of Art .
His work developed formally from classicism to art nouveau . His realistic monumental works with ethnic and national pathos are his most influential works.
His son was the painter Karel Myslbek (1874–1915).

- In 1896 he received a large gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin .
- 1900 Gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris
- 1905 member of the Herrenhaus (Austria)
- In 2003 the asteroid (29490) Myslbek was named after him.

- Equestrian statue of the Czech national saint Wenceslaus of Bohemia , a work lasting almost 30 years. The statue was placed at the top of Wenceslas Square in front of the National Museum in 1912 and is considered one of the most valuable historical and well-known monuments of the city of Prague
- Sculpture of "music" ( hudba ) in the foyer of the Prague National Theater
