The St. Luke Church

The Church of St. Lukas is a church building consecrated in 1962 on Eichhahnweg in Braunschweig - Querum . It belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran regional church in Braunschweig . The entire complex at Eichhahnweg 27 (church, parish hall and sexton's apartment) was awarded the Peter Joseph Krahe Prize , the architecture prize of the city of Braunschweig, for the architectural style that was unique at the time .

The church, including the parish hall, represents the architectural style of that time well to this day and is a leading example of the architecture of that time.

history

The parish of Querum, which had previously been spun off to the parish of the Riddagshausen monastery , grew so much after the Second World War due to the large new housing construction that the old Querum church with its around 100 seats was no longer sufficient. On May 31, 1955, the church council first considered building a new church. A church building savings association was founded to finance the project. After a plot of land was acquired in November 1957 and an agreement was finally reached on the architecture, the decision to start construction was made in May 1959. The foundation stone was laid on October 30, 1960. The plan to connect the church and the parish hall with an atrium was abandoned for cost reasons. On November 11, 1962 (21st Sunday after Trinity), the church, which was given the name of the Apostle Luke by resolution of the church council , was solemnly consecrated.

Altar island with baptismal font
Detail of the baptismal font

St. Luke is a parish church that is aligned with the central center of the baptism, pulpit and altar. Because of the pillars that have been built around the church, it looks like the church is hanging and floating on them. The view of the visitors is always directed towards the sky through the two ribbon windows that run at the top of the church. Even with a well-attended church service, the visitor never gets the feeling of being constricted. The architects of the church designed a floating room as a gateway to heaven ( Genesis 28: 10-22  EU ).

The bronze-studded church doors were built according to plans by Fritz Kühn .

Bell tower

The bell tower of the church is 20 meters away from the church. It marks the axis to the entrance to the church. Four bells have been hanging in it since 1962, which were cast by the FW Schilling bell foundry in Heidelberg:

Bell I: Praise the Lord, my soul 512 kg with the sound as'

Bell II: and what is in me, its holy name 351 kg with the sound b '

Bell III: Praise the Lord my soul 238 kg with the tone b '

Bell IV: and don't forget what he has done you good 164 kg with the sound of '

Furnishing

The altar island with baptismal font, ambo and cross comes from the artist Fritz Fleer .

The abstract ceiling painting (three angels with sun) comes from the artist couple Claus Wallner and Ursula Querner-Wallner .

The organ was built in 1962 by the master organ builder Weißborn in Braunschweig-Lehndorf. It has 2,000 pipes in 23  registers and had a construction cost of over 40,000 DM.
