The Dankeskirche in the Schunteriedlung in Braunschweig is a modern-style church belonging to the Evangelical-Lutheran congregation "Die Brücke". The monument on Tostmannplatz was erected between 1952 and 1954 as the city's first new church in the post-war period. One of the special features of the Dankeskirche is its two-storey structure, the church room (upper floor) and community rooms (ground floor) are located together in the church building. Both the facade and the interior walls are kept simple and modern and, with the exception of the chancel, are painted unadorned.

History and architecture

When the Schuntersiedlung was established in the 1930s, the construction of a church was not initially planned. A parish only developed in the post-war period, after Pastor Paul Finck set up a kindergarten in a barracks in 1947 and also held services there, and the number of residents in the Schuntersiedlung and Michelfeldersiedlung rose. In 1950, Pastor Finck was introduced as pastor of the Schuntersiedlung / Kralenriede parish.

The Dankeskirche was built from 1952 to 1954 according to the plans of the architect Friedrich Berndt (1903–1983). The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on April 29, 1954. On August 8, 1954, the church was consecrated by Regional Bishop Martin Erdmann . In October 1961 the Dankeskirche received two newly cast bells from a Heidelberg foundry. The rectory was built from 1970 to 1971.

The organ of the Dankeskirche was built in two stages in 1954 and 1961 by Friedrich Weißenborn.
