history

The first documentary mention of a chapel in Pürten comes from the year 1050. From 1177 to 1803 Pürten was an incorporated parish of the Augustinian canons of Au am Inn .

The preserved late Gothic church was built around 1400. From the 14th century to 1800 it was the destination of an important Marian pilgrimage with a pilgrimage cult, unique in Europe, with a healing book. It was the gospel book of the blessed Alta von Pürten (Countess Irmingard von Pürten), a French king's daughter. When she died on February 5, 1075, she bequeathed the precious Bible to the Church. When sick people borrowed the book, they healed. The late Carolingian gospels come from the Reims cathedral writing school in the 9th century and have been in the Munich State Library since 1805.
