St. Marien with a former Franciscan monastery

The Catholic parish church of St. Marien is in the historic center of Gemen , a district of Borken . The full patronage is To the Immaculate Conception of Mary . The church together with the Franciscan monastery complex belongs to the historically and art-historically significant complex of Burg and Freiheit Gemen.

The church is a hall building with a richly structured facade in Münsterland baroque forms . The simple monastery building connects to the side. The church was built between 1705 and 1708 with the support of Countess Charlotte Amalie von Limburg-Stirum. The pastoral care was initially taken over by the Franciscans of the Saxon Franciscan Province ( Saxonia ), for whom Charlotte's son Otto Ernst Leopold founded a Franciscan residence at the church in 1719.

Except for the organ, the church has been completely preserved. It has three altars, a pulpit and a gallery, a historic choir stalls as well as historic pews, communion bench , confessionals, statues and pictures.

organ

In the 1980s the church received a new organ . For this purpose, a baroque organ case was purchased and inserted into the gallery parapet. The organ was built by Franz Breil .
