The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Marien stands on a church hill in Heinersdorf , a district of the municipality of Föritztal in the district of Sonneberg ( Thuringia ).

The core of the listed building goes back to a chapel that was a branch church of the Rothenkirchen parish in the high Middle Ages . In 1493, the Bamberg bishop Heinrich III. Groß von Trockau incorporated the independent parish of St. Marien in Heinersdorf. In the same year a late Gothic church was built as a choir tower church. In 1525 the church became Protestant. From 1626 to 1630 a renovation followed with a new construction of the nave, which was raised by a half-timbered floor in 1748 and redesigned inside in the Rococo style. Between 1821 and 1826, the windows were enlarged and the ceiling and galleries redesigned. In 1891/91 a staircase was added and a historical restoration was carried out before the late Baroque version was restored in 1963. The hall church has a recessed, straight, closed choir and a 33 meter high choir tower with a Welsch dome and lantern. The outer walls are slated in places. The baroque interior is spanned by a flat ceiling. A two-story gallery stands on three sides of the wall. The organ dates from 1915 and is located on a gallery in the choir room.

The interior of the church includes, among other things, late Gothic carvings from around 1490. The figures represent Mary on the crescent moon, John the Evangelist and Saints Elizabeth and Margaret. From the 17th century at the latest, the crescent moon Madonna in the Protestant church as Mary in abandon was the destination of pilgrimages by Catholic believers.

Three bronze bells hang in the church tower. The big bell was cast by Melchior and Hieronimus Moerinck in Erfurt in 1610. It bears the name of Duke Johann Casimir and a crucifix. The middle bell from the 14th century is probably a gift from Banz Monastery . The smallest bell dates from 1959 and was made by Franz Schilling Söhne in Apolda. It replaced a 500-year-old bell that was given in 1942.
