St. Marien (Zwätz)
The Church of St. Marien is the Protestant church in the district of Zwätze of the city of Jena in Thuringia .
location
The church is located in the northernmost part of the city of Jena on a hill north opposite the Holy Mountain on the western edge of the Saale floodplain .
history
The oldest parts of the church date from around 1100. The construction of the first house of God is traced back to the work of the mission orders among the wine and arable farmers and craftsmen. After the economic and political influence of the Teutonic Order on church life declined, the influence of the estate grew.
The village church of St. Marien was initially a Romanesque hall church with a rectangular choir and a semicircular apse for the friars. Its oldest components date from the 12th century.
In the 14th and 15th centuries it was enlarged and rebuilt in the Gothic style. The church tower built in 1513 dates from this time . Construction work in the 17th century gave the church its current appearance. The last restoration work took place from 1985 to 1993.
