St. Markus (Speyer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Markus Church in Speyer was a parish and monastery church on the field in front of the Marxtorturm, the former entrance gate to the St. Markus suburb of Speyer. It was a medium-sized sacred building with Romanesque and Gothic style elements.

Construction and meaning

In the 12th century, the parish church for the southern suburb was built in the Romanesque style in the south of the city of Speyer in front of the later built Marxtor (today corner of St.-Markus-Straße, Karl-Leiling-Allee and Lindenstraße). The church was about 40 m long and 25 m wide. It was surrounded by a wall and was close to a western branch of the Rhine. In the 13th century the church was given a Gothic renovation. In 1317 the parish church became a Wilhelmitenkloster , which was donated by a canon from the monastery of St. German . However, the order gave up the monastery again around 1500. Along the arterial road from the White Gate (today the intersection of St.-German-Straße, Steingasse, Herdstraße and St.-Markus-Straße) to the church, the St. Markus suburb, which was walled a little later, developed in the 13th century, which due to its location also called suburb in front of the White Gate.

The last years of the Church

The church survived both the Thirty Years' War and the Speyer town fire of 1689. The once so important parish church at the gates of Speyer stood for over 100 years before it was auctioned off and demolished around 1800. Memories of this sacred building can be found in the Palatinate Historical Museum . It can also be seen on Philipp Stürmer's bird's eye view plan The Free Imperial City of Speyer before it was destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689 .
