The Catholic parish church of St. Martin is a listed church building in Benninghausen , a district of Lippstadt in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The parish belongs to the pastoral association Lippstadt-Süd-West in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

St. Martin is the former church of the Benninghausen monastery . The late-Gothic four-bay hall is made of hammer-right quarry stone, and the choir ends in a five-eighth section . During excavations in 1981, the foundations of a hall without a tower, with a rectangular choir, were uncovered; this previous church probably dates from the 11th century. The Romanesque tower was built in the 12th century. The nave, slightly shifted to the south, the choir and the sacristy to the north were rebuilt in 1514. In 1892 the sacristy was expanded and a chapel was added on the south side.

architecture

The walls are divided by three-lane windows with fish bubble tracery. A surrounding sill cornice summarizes the building, a further structure is achieved by the buttresses. The entrance in the tower is built in later, the acoustic arcades with inserted columns are round arched. In the interior, the ribbed vault rests on consoles. The original painting was restored in 1957 and 1958 based on findings. The tower hall is also equipped with a groin vault, it opens with a pointed arch to the nave.

Furnishing

The tabernacle, view from 1911

The richly adorned sacrament house made of Baumberg sandstone from the 16th century comes from the vicinity of the Bunickman workshop . The octagonal baptismal font is traced and dates from the early 16th century. The richly carved pulpit in baroque form is marked 1695, it was restored from 1965 to 1966. The wooden three-seat is marked 1520 and decorated with folding . The paintings, copies from the 18th century, show the birth of Christ and the descent from the cross.

Outside there is a crucifixion group made of Baumberger sandstone in front of the choir. This 16th century work was renovated from 1975 to 1976.

Benninghauser Cross

The important reliquary crucifix made of oak was probably carved in Cologne around 1070. The very slim body, the tendons of which protrude clearly, looks simple. Parts of the original version have survived and were restored in 1950. The bars of the cross were renewed, the sepulcrum added later.
