The parish church of St. Martin is the main church of the parish of St. Martin in Wiltingen , it was built from 1909 to 1910. It is one of the largest church buildings on the Saar , especially when measured against the population of the place. The church is surrounded by vineyards in the Saar Valley in the middle of the historic town center.

history

At the site of the present parish church of St. Martin was up to the beginning of the 20th century a smaller, also St. Martin consecrated church .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the parish, together with its priest Dehen, came to the decision to build a larger church in the center of the village in line with the increasing number of residents and believers. It should be the third historically documented church on Wiltinger Grund. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1909 and just one year later, on July 16, 1910, the neo-Gothic building was consecrated in a solemn pontifical office by Auxiliary Bishop Karl Ernst Schrod . A large part of the construction costs were covered by wealthy donors. Many names can still be found today in the large motif windows of the sacred building.

Due to its construction and size, the building is still widely known today as the “Saardom”.

There is a garden around the church. The community's former cemetery was reopened a few hundred meters away due to lack of space; previously it was laid out around the church.

Rectory

All full-time priests working in Wiltingen are housed in the rectory of the parish community. The 18th century building is just a few meters from the sacristy of the Saardom. If there is construction or renovation work in the church, masses can be celebrated in the basement of the rectory, the Martinsklause. It is set up and designed accordingly.
