The pilgrimage chapel St. Martin im Kofel

St. Martin im Kofel ( Italian: San Martino al Monte ) is a hamlet in the municipality of Latsch in South Tyrol ( Italy ). The hamlet is located at about  1700  m slm on the Sonnenberg in Vinschgau and has about 100 inhabitants.

The name comes from an old pilgrimage chapel , which was first mentioned in 1510 and was consecrated to Martin von Tours as the patron saint of the flocks. The small church is built over a rock grotto, in which there is a miraculous image of the church patron, which shows him on horseback. According to a legend, this is said to have "ridden" here in a miraculous way from nearby Göflan .

St. Martin im Kofel is characterized in particular by numerous mountain farms on the Vinschgau Sonnenberg, which often have extreme locations (e.g. Egg and Vorra) and are characterized by migration.

At St. Martin you will find the highest relative settlement heights in the Alps, with 1200 meters between the valley height and Berghof - at a horizontal distance of just under three kilometers.

In 2005 the one-class mountain school, which was run for the children of the mountain farms, was closed due to a lack of students.
