St. Martinus in More

St. Martinus is the Roman Catholic village church of Mehr , a district of Kranenburg in the Kleve district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

In 1332 a parish church was first mentioned in Mehr. In 1338 the knight Roland von Hagedorn transferred the patronage rights over the church to the Monterberg Monastery , which exchanged it with the Bedburg Monastery in the same year .

The current church was built in the 15th century as a single-nave brick building with a higher choir with a 5/8 end. The west tower in front of it was raised by one storey at the beginning of the 20th century and covered with a steep slate pyramid. In addition, a sacristy was added to the east of the choir.

The cemetery was laid out around the church. There are several grave monuments and a warrior memorial by the Flemish sculptor Achilles Moortgat .

On June 26, 2005, the then parish of St. Martinus Mehr merged with the neighboring parishes of St. Antonius Nütterden and St. Antonius Frasselt to form the new parish of St. Antonius Abbas , Kranenburg with its headquarters in Nütterden. Since then, the church of St. Martinus in Mehr has served as a branch church.
