St. Michael , also called "Michaeliskirche" , is the Protestant parish church of the municipality of Wain in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia .

Reformation in Wain

In the 16th century Wain belonged to the monastic property of the Imperial Abbey of Ochsenhausen . After Abbot Gerwig Blarers bought the village of Ummendorf with subjects and the castle in financial difficulties, the monastery looked for a buyer for the village of Wain to the north and initially found the city of Ulm as an interested party . However, it made it a condition that it retained the right of patronage and that the new owner should not make any changes in religious matters. Abbot Andreas II. Sonntag and the Ulm magistrate were already in agreement when the Bishop of Constance was Cardinal Markus Sittikus von Hohenemsrefused to consent. Then in 1570 the brother-in-law of Ulm's mayor Beßerer, the Catholic Eustach von Landfried , a son of the Wittelsbacher Ernst von Bayern bought Wain for 65,000 guilders including residents. The buyer later turned out to be a straw man on behalf of the city of Ulm. In 1573 Wain got his first Protestant bailiff, Gabriel Neudörffer, who introduced the Reformation here together with the Ulm preacher Dürr .

The church was built in 1687 under the supervision of Heinrich Hacker. The nave of the single-nave, beaver-tail-roofed building with a southern sacristy opens into a choir with a three-eighth end. The tower to the northeast of the church comes from the previous church.

Interior

There are coffered wooden ceilings in the choir and nave. The altar dates from 1658, the baptismal font and pulpit from 1688, the stalls on the west wall from 1578 and the choir and ship stalls with a curly coat of arms from 1698. On the wall there are several donor paintings of the Ulm aristocracy. A plaque from 1658 commemorates the immigration of around 300 Protestant exiles from the Duchy of Carinthia . Seriousness and internalization determine the cult area.

St. Michael is considered the most beautiful Protestant village church in Upper Swabia.
